The weekend round-upItaly – Serie A: We start here thanks to the progress of Sampdoria, who are level with Juventus at the top after taking 12 points from 12- one of the few ’smaller’ clubs from the big European leagues to still hold a 100 per cent record.

They overcame Siena 4-1 on Sunday and owe much of their lofty position to the resurgent form of Antonio Cassano (pictured), who is now the subject of an Italy recall campaign in the press.

Juventus kept up their pace with a 2-0 win over Livorno while Inter beat Cagliari 2-1 away and AC Milan won 1-0 at home to Bologna.

England – Premier League: After an exciting start England already has a ’same as usual’ feel with Manchester United hitting form and winning thanks to goals in generous injury time allocations, this time 4-3 at home to rivals Manchester City.

Liverpool beat West Ham 3-2 away, Chelsea defeated Tottenham 3-0 to stay top and Arsenal beat Wigan.

Spain – La Liga: Real Madrid beat Xerez 5-0 at the Bernabeu with two goals from Ronaldo (the thin one) to keep up with Barcelona, who won 5-2 at home to Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Valencia drew 2-2 with Sporting Gijon, and Athletic Bilbao kept up their 100 per cent record with a victory iver Villareal.

Elsewhere, in Germany’s Bundesliga, Bayern beat Nurnberg 2-1, and Wolfsburg beat Schalke 2-1 away thanks to a double from Edin Dzeko.

In Portugal Benfica won away at Uniao Leiria, and Braga shocked Porto 1-0.

In Ligue 1 in France, PSG and Lyon drew 1-1 and Bordeaux won 2-0 at Boulogne.
