The weekend round-up

England – Premier League: The first game of the new season in England saw Chelsea grab a late goal to beat Hull 2-1 at home and seal three points on Carlo Ancelotti’s competitive debut as blues manager. Didier Drogba impressed with both goals.
Arsenal opened their campaign with a stunning 6-1 demolition away to Everton at Goodison park – a game in which attention was inevitably on Joleon Lescott, Toffees centre back and Manchester City target. After that performance you’d think they’d be snapping Mark Hughes’ hands, feet, and arms off.
Manchester United also won, overcoming Birmingham 1-0 with a Wayne Rooney goal at Old Trafford, but carried noticeably less menace without Cristiano Ronaldo.
Liverpool, on the other hand, went down 2-1 away at Tottenham. Assou-Ekotto put the home team ahead with a great drive, Gerrard equalised with a penalty and Spurs defender Sebastien Bassong nodded in a free-kick for the winner. There were also wins for Wigan, 2-0 away at Villa, Stoke at home to Burnley and Manchester City away at Blackburn.
Germany-Bundesliga: Champions Wolfsburg won 3-1 away at Cologne while Bayern could only draw at home to Werder Bremen. The away side were in front after Ozil’s 39th minute strike, and it took a strike from Gomez in the 72nd to salvage a point for the hosts.
Other notable results saw Schalke win 3-0 at home to Bochum, while Hamburg made mincemeat of Dortmund, beating them 4-1.
Elsewhere in Portugal Benfica could only draw 1-1 with Maritimo and Porto could only manage the same scoreline away at Pacos Ferreira in a weekend when the league saw only nine goals scored in seven matches.
In Turkey, Galatasaray beat Denizlispor 4-1 at home, while Fenerbache won 3-0 at home to Sivasspor.
Finally in the Eredivise in Holland, a thriller in Eindhoven saw PSV thrice come from behind to beat Ajax 4-3.
