The weekend preview

The weekend preview is back as the first of the big three European leagues kicks off on Saturday.
Premier League fans will see Chelsea host Hull on Saturday with blues manager Carlo Ancellotti getting his first taste of competitive English football. Arsenal travel to Everton later in the day and Sunday will see Manchester United begin their title defence at home to promoted Birmingham while Liverpool head to Tottenham. All eyes will be on Steven Gerrard who is supposedly still carrying an injury which ruled him out of England’s friendly with Holland on Wednesday.
New boys Burnley are away at Stoke and other the other promotion winners, Wolves, are home to West Ham.
La Liga doesn’t kick off in Spain until August 30 but the super cup has its first leg on Sunday with Barcelona off to face Billbao. Serie A will not appear until August 22, although Lazio have already overcome Inter 2-1 in Italian super cup.
Germany’s Bundesliga is already underway with Wolfsburg looking to defend their shock title win last season. They are already top after the opening game, beating Stuttgart 2-0 at home. On Saturday they will travel to Cologne with Bayern at home to Werder Bremen.
Other leagues already in progress include Ligue 1 in France where Bordeaux have also had a successful start to their title defence with a 2-1 win over Lens. Tomorrow they travel to Sochaux.
Holland’s Eredivise has also started and Ajax are the early leaders with two games played. They are off to PSV on Sunday in an early season headliner.
