PROFILE: Esteban Granero

granero_02_2007Who?: A young Getafe midfielder and one of the stacks of players who start off through the Real Madrid system and end up at less glamorous clubs, then explode back into the limelight.

Has recently been showing fine form in La Liga which could see Real exercise a buy-back option on him, or attract the interest of other clubs. Creative, and can score goals, also not afraid of a tackle.

Some stats: He’s still just 21 and has struck five goals in the league, most notably a crucial one on the final day for Getafe against Racing with that useful right foot of his. Decent close control too. 5ft 10” tall.

Clubs interested: Has been linked with Liverpool and a return to Real Madrid thanks to the buy back option. Will no doubt be linked with more before the summer’s end.

Has been compared to: Zinedine Zidane, and a Spanish version of Steven Gerrard. Needless to say, he’s a long way from that yet.

They say: β€œIn a game when Getafe desperately needed a player to stand and be counted, they found one in Esteban Granero. Neither of his goals were particularly brilliant, coming from the spot and a goalkeeper error, but his performance was commanding and he worked hard for the cause all match.” Goal.com La Liga round-up in May.

Other facts: First emerged as a hot prospect while still a youth player at Real and impressed at the 2007 Fifa under-20 World Cup. Eight appearances and two goals for Spain’s under-21 side.

Video: An example of that explosive right foot in a league match against Sporting Gijon earlier this season.
