The weekend round-up

felix-magath-wpcGermany – Bundesliga: Wolfsburg won their first-ever league title on the final day by beating Werder Bremen 5-1 at home. Bayern Munich had needed Wolfsburg to drop points having beaten VfB Stuttgart 2-1 at home but were left disappointed.

The landmark victory is all the more remarkable given Wolfsburg have only existed since 1945 and finished fifth last season – which at the time was the club’s best-ever league result. Former Bayern Munich manager Felix Magath (pictured) has been the inspiration behind the side’s incredible achievement.

Bayern now look set for a rebuilding period in the close season as they bid to regain their place at the top of the German football tree. Cottbus and Karlsruhe were relegated.

England – Premier League: All the talk in England on the last day was of the relegation of Newcastle United, who went down after losing 1 – 0 away to Aston Villa. A point would have been enough for the Tyneside club but Alan Shearer’s men failed to lift their game again and plunge down to the Championship, Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Obafembi Martins and all.

Middlesbrough also joined them after they failed to pull off a mathematic miracle. West Brom are already down.

Spain – La Liga: Numanica and Recreativo are facing life in Spain’s second tier, but who will join them will be decided in the last games this coming weekend. Just in the drop zone are Sporting Gijon, while Osasuna are level with them on 40 points. Betis, Valladolid and Getafe could all also face the prospect of filling that final spot.

Italy – Serie A: Lecce and Reggina went down but Torino and Bologna stay alive for another week after a loss and a draw respectively. Both are on 34 points, with Bologna commanding a goal difference just two better than Torino.

Elsewhere the Turkish league is going down to the final day this weekend. Besiktas have a two point lead at the top over Sivasspor after both clubs won on Sunday.

Brazil’s Campeonato saw heavyweights Palmeiras and Sao Paulo scrape out a nil – nil draw, while Corinthians beat Gremio 2 -1. Leaders Internacional beat Goias 1 – 0 away.
