The weekend preview

alex_ferguson_by_fvsEngland – Premier League: Manchester United will be champions for the third season in a row if they can get at least a point from their home tie with Arsenal on Saturday. Liverpool, in second, will now need nothing short of an all-time English league miracle if they are to snatch the title.

Should United seal it, there’s bound to be a fresh round of speculation about how much longer Alex Ferguson (pictured) will remain in charge of the side before deciding to retire. Since taking over in 1986 the Scot has won 10 league titles with the club, not including this weekend’s events.

The relegation battle sees Newcastle, in 17th and one place above relegation, play Fulham at home, while Hull, overtaken by Newcastle on Monday, travel to Bolton in what is a must-win game for the Tigers. Both Middlesbrough and West Brom are all but down.

Spain – La Liga: Barcelona can also clinch the title by getting at least a point away to Mallorca on Sunday, but will win it anyway if Real are beaten away at Villareal on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid play Valencia on Sunday in the battle for fourth and a clash of two devastating attacks backed by unpredictable defenders.

At the bottom Sporting Gijon host in-form Malaga and must win to stand any chance of getting out of the bottom three. Both Recreativo and Numancia look dead and buried.

Italy – Serie A: Inter are at home to Siena and need only one win from the final three games for a fourth title in a row. As with United in England, the league trophy is likely to be followed by speculation about the manager – Jose Mourinho could be heading out of the San Siro, not to retirement but to another club.

Further down the league, Reggina could be relegated if they lose at home to Cagliari and Torino win at Napoli.

Elsewhere the German title race sees Bayern and Wolfsburg still neck-a-neck on 63 points with two games to go, with Bayern off to TSG and Wolfsburg away to Hannover.

In Turkey with three games left Besiktas in first place are away to Ankaragucu, while Sivasspor, two points behind them, go to Hacettepe.

Brazil’s national ‘Brasileirao’ championship has just got underway and notable fixtures include champions Sao Paulo playing Atletico Paranaese and Botafogo hosting Corinthians.
