Spain – La Liga: Barca could only draw 2-2 away to Valencia on Saturday and Real then overcame Sevilla away the following day to cut the gap at the top to four points. Barca needed a last ten-minute strike from Thierry Henry (pictured) to get the point. The two will face each other at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday in one of the most significant ‘clasicos’ of recent seasons.
There was a vital win for Espanyol over Betis but Recreativo went down 2-4 at home to Mallorca to fall deeper into trouble.
England – Premier League: Liverpool beat Hull 3-1 away to briefly put the pressure on Man United but the champions responded with a 5-2 rout of Tottenham. Spurs actually went 0-2 up but the game turned on a controversial penalty awarded to United after Tottenham keeper Gomes clearly got the ball at the feet of Dimitar Berbatov but saw the ref point to the spot.
At the other end of the league, Middlesbrough were beaten 2-0 at Arsenal and now look in serious threat of joining West Brom for a likely drop.
Italy- Serie A: Inter went down to Napoli 1-0 away in a shock result, and AC Milan beat Palermo 3-0 at home to close the gap to seven points.
Elsewhere Bologna overcame Genoa 2-0 for a confidence-boosting three-points and Reggina, also threatened by the drop got a credible draw at home to Juve but are still in touble in last place. Lecce, seond from bottom now, managed a 2-1 home win to Catania.
Elsewhere: Over in Germany Bayern sacked coach Jurgen Klinsmann after losing 1-0 to Schalke – a result which massively dents their title hopes and puts Champions League qualification in doubt. At the top Cottbus beat leaders Wolfsburg to aid their chances of survival and open up the league – Hertha Berlin are just two points off 1st place.
In Turkey Sivasspor kept their one point lead after beating Trabzonspor. Besiktas kept in touch with a 2-0 win away at Eskisehirspor.
Portugal’s league saw Porto remain on top with a 2-0 win over Vitoria Setubal.
